Tattoo Portfolio
Fine line is the quietest tattoo in the room, and the hardest to get right.
Fine line tattoos trade weight for restraint. Thin, deliberate lines, minimal shading, plenty of breathing room on the skin. It is the style people walk into our Whyte Avenue studio asking for when they want something small, precise, and personal rather than loud. Here on the second floor in Old Strathcona, Michael Gumatay leads our fine line work, drawing the kind of clean, delicate pieces the style is known for.
The technique
The look comes down to the needle and the hand behind it. Fine line is usually built with a single needle or a very tight grouping, laid in one confident pass instead of layered like heavier work. There is little room to hide. A line that wavers, sits too deep, or doubles back shows immediately, so the discipline is in the prep and the steadiness, not the flourish. That is why the consultation matters here more than almost anywhere else, where the design gets sized and spaced before any ink touches skin.
Who it suits
Fine line suits you if you want something understated. Small botanicals, thin script, simple linework portraits, a piece that reads as detail rather than statement. It sits well on forearms, wrists, ribs, and collarbones, anywhere the skin stays relatively flat and the line can rest cleanly. If you are after dense, saturated colour or deep shadow, another style will serve you better. If you want the lightest version of a permanent mark, this is it.
How it ages
Be honest with yourself about the trade-off. The same thinness that makes fine line beautiful is what makes it move over time. Skin shifts, and very thin lines tend to soften and spread a little across years rather than staying razor sharp forever. That is the nature of the craft, not a flaw in the work. Good placement, sun protection, and the occasional touch-up keep a fine line piece looking intentional for a long time, which is exactly what our aftercare guide is built to help you do.
If you are weighing a fine line piece, start with a free consultation so we can talk placement, size, and how the design will hold up. Our studio minimum is $125, and walk-ins are welcome whenever an artist is free, though precision work like this is usually worth booking ahead. When you are ready, book a sitting with Michael Gumatay and bring whatever reference you have, rough sketch or saved photo, we will take it from there.
Fine line tattoos — common questions
- Do fine line tattoos age well over time?
- They age gracefully when they are placed and cared for well, but thin lines do soften over the years. As skin naturally shifts, very fine work tends to spread slightly rather than holding a razor edge forever. Solid placement, diligent sun protection, and an occasional touch-up keep a fine line piece reading clean for a long time. It is the honest trade-off for how delicate the style is up front.
- Is fine line a good choice for a first tattoo?
- It often is. Fine line pieces are usually smaller and simpler, which makes for a shorter, more manageable first sitting. Just go in knowing the lines are delicate by design, so the realistic expectation is gentle softening over the years rather than a heavy, bold mark that barely moves. We will walk you through size and placement at your consultation so the piece suits both your skin and your plans.
- How small can fine line lettering realistically go?
- Smaller than most styles, since a single needle can hold genuinely tiny detail, but there is a floor. Push lettering too small and the lines sit close enough that they can blur together as the skin heals and settles over time. We will tell you honestly at the consultation if a size risks losing legibility, and suggest a scale that still reads clearly years down the line. The goal is detail that stays detail, not a smudge.
What our clients say
Came in as a walk-in planning to get something small, but left with a piece I've wanted for so long and I'm obsessed. Michael's attention to detail and fine line work is unreal — so clean and precise. Definitely found my go-to artist.
The absolute best place to get tattooed. The environment is calm and fun, the staff playful and always answering every question with a calculated answer. Juan is one of their world renowned artists. If you haven't been, this is the place to be.
Was walking down Whyte Ave after lunch, saw the sign, decided to take a look inside and was greeted by a welcoming team. Michael was attentive while I described my idea — came back with some amazing sketches and from then I knew I was getting my piece done. Quick and clean.
All around awesome experience — the workplace and everything used was kept super sanitary. Brian did a spectacular job on the whole tattoo. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to get a solid tattoo.
