The discipline of black and grey
Black and grey is tattooing stripped to its essentials — no colour to lean on, just black ink diluted into a range of greys, with bare skin left as your brightest highlight. Done well, it reads with a depth and weight that lasts. It's the backbone of the work we do at Phantom Avenue on Whyte Avenue, from photoreal portraits to smoke, script, and fine religious detail.
The technique
Every value comes from how the ink is laid down and softened — controlled washes, smooth gradients, and clean black holds. Our artists build contrast deliberately: deep blacks for structure, soft mid-greys for form, and untouched skin for light. That restraint is exactly why a strong black and grey piece still reads sharp years later, when busier work can muddy.
Who it suits
Black and grey flatters almost any subject and any skin tone. It's the natural choice for realism and portraits, religious and script work, animals, statues, and architectural detail — anywhere form and shadow matter more than colour. It also reworks and covers older tattoos better than most styles, since heavy blacks and shading absorb what's underneath.
How it ages
Because the work leans on contrast rather than a range of pigments, black and grey tends to age gracefully — the greys settle and the blacks hold their line. Longevity still comes down to healing it properly and keeping it out of the sun, which we walk every client through in our aftercare guide.

Black & grey tattoos — common questions
- Does black and grey age better than colour?
- It tends to hold up well, because it relies on contrast and value rather than a spread of pigments that can shift over time. Deep blacks and clean greys keep their read as skin changes, where a colour piece has more to lose. That said, the real factor is care — healing it properly and shielding it from sun matters more than the style you choose.
- Does black and grey fade to blue or green over time?
- It can with older or poorly applied work, but it doesn't have to. The greenish cast people remember usually comes from dated inks and shading set too shallow; modern black pigment laid at the right depth is made to settle as true, neutral grey. Healing it well and keeping it out of the sun does the rest. Done properly, black and grey reads as black and grey for the long haul.
- What's the difference between smooth black and grey and a realism style?
- Smooth, or soft, black and grey leans on even gradients and a gentle range of greys for a quieter, almost airbrushed feel. Realism pushes harder on contrast — sharper blacks, defined edges, and tighter detail to mimic a photograph. Both live under the same black and grey umbrella, and the right call depends on your subject and how bold you want it to read. Bring references to your consultation and we'll point you toward the approach that suits the piece.
What our clients say
Came in as a walk-in planning to get something small, but left with a piece I've wanted for so long and I'm obsessed. Michael's attention to detail and fine line work is unreal — so clean and precise. Definitely found my go-to artist.
The absolute best place to get tattooed. The environment is calm and fun, the staff playful and always answering every question with a calculated answer. Juan is one of their world renowned artists. If you haven't been, this is the place to be.
Was walking down Whyte Ave after lunch, saw the sign, decided to take a look inside and was greeted by a welcoming team. Michael was attentive while I described my idea — came back with some amazing sketches and from then I knew I was getting my piece done. Quick and clean.
All around awesome experience — the workplace and everything used was kept super sanitary. Brian did a spectacular job on the whole tattoo. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to get a solid tattoo.
